Will had spent the rest of the day out with the child's grave and then kept to himself, with a Hannibal shaped shadow, after lockdown. The next day he'd focused on pulling his weight with the heat suit and avoiding eye contact with everybody and this had continued through most of the day after that as well.
Oddly enough the awkward wasn't from the licking/teeth incident, at least not on Will's part. The awkward that was lingering with him came from the open conversation about how being around House helped make things work for him. The diagnostician and he had passed a couple conversations that were more open than either of them was comfortable being with a person.
Usually those moments were carefully wrapped back up into the safe shadows beneath either theorizing or shit talking one another. The other day they had been working their way through the theorizing coping mechanism, when everything had gone sideways.
Thus Will was ... dithering. Looking for an excuse, not finding a good one and back to dithering. Up to the point where the Admin gave him the perfect 'excuse'.
He waited until after lockdown, after getting cleaned up, before he took his tablet and headed purposefully towards wherever House was setting up for the night. Will walked right up to the doctor and began a strong and thoroughly important conversation with a sense of confidence and purpose!
Just kidding.
He made it to the edge of the doorway, crept into the shadows thrown by the weak light and the walls around them, and shifted from foot to foot before making the first move. So to speak. ]
I was hoping to get your opinion on the beacon. I know you don't like having yours on, so the first time Admin offered it, I passed.
But the offer has come up again, and I'm wondering if there isn't a strong suggestion that something might be coming that we need the protection from.
[House is aware of Will's presence as soon as he's in the doorway. The doctor doesn't immediately acknowledge him, though. He gnawing on his slowly-diminishing bone and scrolling through the network he's not allowed to talk on. It's incredibly annoying and he has people he wants to touch base with plans and ideas on. Ugh. Two more days. Two more days and the glitter text app is his. Along with the extra bottle of Vicodin.
When Will speaks, the doctor looks up and toward the dark shape of him.]
You're increasing our chance of an anomaly encounter. And she can track your movements more precisely. I'm sure she'll love that once we get past the goddamn bunker.
[House is going to pretend like he's not still feeling awkward about being unable to control himself. That's always the best way to deal with these things.]
It's supposed to slow MN poisoning as a trade off, but... [He waves his bone vaguely in the air for a moment before returning it to his mouth and watching the other man.]
[ It was not easy, coming in first, but now that he was here Will kept pressing forward. It would have been the most natural thing to go over and sit beside House, but out of deference to not wanting to tempt the MN poisoning, Will retreated to the other wall instead. ]
I don't trust her. [ He admitted, sliding down to sit. ] I'm not worried about the anomalies. [ He paused and ducked his head slightly. ] Not as worried about the anomalies as it is that I don't trust her.
[ So why are they even having this conversation? ]
Truth is I haven't found anything to make me trust any of the entities in this town. The Admin, Shelley, Andromeda and Winter, even the Prophet's Cult. But maybe I'm being too paranoid. The fact that they've offered this app a second time, either they believe it's important for our survival or they really want to be able to track us?
You shouldn't trust them. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use them. [House has this particular logic worked out.]
And that Beacon app's been offered six or seven times since it first showed up on day, like... Day 50-something. They've offered it at odd intervals. Doesn't seem to be a pattern.
[But he'll start scrolling back through the archives in his tablet. This might take a while.]
I had never seen it before Day 331. [ Will explained, drawing his knees up and looping his arms over them, watching House. ] It's the only app I've ever seen offered to us, which might have made it tempting, if I wasn't aware of your history with it.
[ He pays attention. Even when it seems he's not paying attention, he pays attention. ]
[The only response is a grunt of acknowledgement around the chew toy for several minutes as House cross-references the dates the Beacon App has been offered out and the days weird crap happened. Will might be forgiven for thinking he's been forgotten. But about twenty minutes later, House looks up, pulling the bone out of his mouth.]
I was wrong. The Beacon App was first offered on... Day 14. During some error that amped everyone's paranoia up and made them start hallucinating voices and a light in the sky. There were a couple of other errors after that. People with the Beacon had different effects than the people without. The anomalies weren't always around. They didn't turn up until Day 19. The people who had their Beacon Apps on attracted them when they were first starting to appear and form. More than the people without. The Beacon App kids also had the devil's own luck for the first error I was around for. Day 36, that's when we had the shadow people wandering around town first show up and some people got possessed. After that, people started getting sick, like really sick. Nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, fever, headache, body ache, coma. Grody. You had your Beacon on you were fine, though.
Day 50, we got the first glimpse at the MN poisoning effects. All of 'em. You had your Beacon on, you didn't get it as bad as other people. The Admin offered the app five days later.
Next time was Day 67. We didn't have anything happen until Day 69, though. There were weird ass effects, like people blinking in and out of existence. Hallucinating yourself into an old memory, losing your senses, falling into a coma.
Then it was Day 78. Again, nothing too weird until Day 80. We got our very own pet anomalies trying to grab us constantly. That's when Winter offered us an app to get rid of 'em. Except she didn't tell anyone it'd delete a memory of whoever the person looked like to do it. Admin came in a forced it on the rest of us. Similar program, but it just deleted random memories. [He glances to the side. He still doesn't remember anything about how he met Stacy or why they started dating. Not that it matters. It doesn't matter. House blinks a few times before continuing.]
Day 120 was right after we had those funshared dreams you got to experience.
Day 200 there wasn't anything. Just Winter contacting us around then--Day 199 and then again Day 202 to tell us she'd made private messages private from the Admin. Set off the firewall or... something. I got a lamprey thing climbing out of my tablet and attaching itself to may face. [And trying to bite/suck it off... which is quite possibly the most excruciating pain he has ever experienced in his life barring Kid's torture surgery in the tower and even then, those are pretty neck-and-neck.]
Day 331, right after our little pit adventure and then today. Probably means something's gonna happen with those red lines in a day or two or it's the cue for Winter to call.
[ Will was settling in to what appeared to possibly be a long few hours, when House started to share his research. Looking up from under his lashes, he blinked as he tried to absorb the depth of information the diagnostician shared.
Eventually Will's brow furrowed, relaxed and furrowed again. ]
I'm not hearing anything that makes me want to turn it on. This sounds like a lot of cons, for just the one pro and as you pointed out, even that pro seems pretty useless.
Edited (It was a bad pun and I felt bad for it!) 2018-03-17 00:59 (UTC)
It was an excellent pun, how dare you second guess yourself!
Eeyup. And while the walk down memory lane was fun, you didn't come in here to ask my opinion on something obvious. What do you want, Graham?
[House can deflect, he can lie, he can deliberately not acknowledge, but what he can't stand is pussyfooting. Will either needs to have out with it or go away.]
[ Actually he wasn't pussyfooting, well not precisely. ]
I genuinely wanted your opinion, House. [ Will said in a level tone, his eyes finally meeting and holding the doctor's gaze. ] This app appears to offer relief, a sort of gift even. But ever since I've known you, you have railed against it.
[ The melt down after the ghost collective for instance. ]
It did occur to me that your frustration was coming from the fact that you can't seem to control it, rather than the application itself. So tell me, if this was your choice, would you turn it on?
[A lot of the railing had come due to House having no say in the matter. He doesn't like his life--what's best for him--being decided for him by other people. It puts him right back in the hospital room, waking up to a massive scar on his thigh and a cane and pills for the rest of his life. Stacy apologizing over and over but admitting that she'd do it again in a heartbeat for him. To protect him.
Anyway.]
It's snake oil. Don't buy it. You might not be able to get it off again.
[ Will seemed to consider this for a moment, then gave House one of his best puppy dog eyed looks. ]
Pretty please with a cherry on top?
[ He didn't genuinely expect House to kill him. House would bite, like a cornered rat, he'd attack but the goal was escape not to kill.
In fact he didn't think House had it in him to kill. Even a mercy kill was questionable, not because House would want a person to suffer (beyond reason) but rather because the diagnostician wouldn't accept that there was a puzzle he couldn't solve. ]
Doesn't he bite everyone he murders? One way or another. [He's not answering that question about the threesome, Will. Mainly because Hannibal didn't respond to House's comment about said threesome idea.]
It depends. Hannibal kills and consumes for a wide variety of reasons. [ Which Will was a little leery about getting into those types of details as some of them were private to Hannibal. ]
And there is a difference between the victims of the Ripper and Hannibal's tributes. [ For lack of a better word.
Will set his tablet aside, and adopted his usual pose of knees bent, arms resting across them. ]
The Ripper chooses his victims from a pool of individuals he finds rude. People who are, in his eyes, no better than pigs due to their behavior and he treats them accordingly. Sometimes it will take him months, even years to circle back on someone he marked at the time of their transgression. It was part of what made him so difficult to investigate.
Anyway those victims, Hannibal would throw these elaborate dinner parties that were known for attracting the top of Maryland, D.C. and Virginia high society. People tripped over themselves for an invitation. Lavish affairs, and the menu was created and prepared by Hannibal.
[ He won't say it, but rather waits to let House connect the dots. ]
[It's not a very far reach, and House can't help rolling his eyes and huffing at the theater in it.]
Anyone ever tell him there are better ways to show off?
[He should probably be more horrified, but he knows Hannibal is a cannibal and a complete asshole. There's a part of the doctor that can see the visceral satisfaction and amusement in conning a bunch of rubes into doing something they'd profess to never do. And have them not only champing at the bit to do it, but raving afterward. It is masterful manipulation, and House would tip his hat to anyone who could pull something like that off.]
So, basically if he disappears and comes back with extra meat, make sure I check that it's not human before eating it?
What about the 'tributes'? I'm assuming he was planning on you for one of those.
[House just kind of assumes he'll eventually be in the former category. Not just the biting Will, but he's been rude to Hannibal before this.]
Don't encourage him. He'll take it as a personal goal.
[ At the second question and the sentence after it, Will's lips twitched upwards. ]
'Was'? [ He shook his head. ] He already tried once, though in that instance it was a combination of consuming me and torturing Jack at the same time. [ Will pointed to the scar at his forehead. ]
He has an 'inconvenient' compassion for me. [ Will continued. ] And he is in love with me, but that doesn't mean he won't reach the point where his desire to consume me will overwhelm his desire to have me by his side.
I suspect it's hard to see, but in his eyes there would be a pentultimate beauty in such an act. It would be the pinnacle of intimacy for him.
[ Glancing at House, Will smiled an expression that was both serene but also melancholy. ]
Just because the tiger comes to your hand, chuffs softly at you, rubs his head against you in affection and will lay in your lap with love in his eyes, doesn't mean he stops being a tiger. Only an arrogant fool would believe that those predatory instincts won't always lay just beneath the surface and it is a question of when, not if, they will be triggered.
The difference with a tiger is you're not usually letting it screw you on the regular.
[Just saying, Will.]
Unless you've got something you wanna tell me about your kinks, Graham Cracker.
[House runs a hand through his hair--it's really getting too long--and tries to look at it from Hannibal's perspective. It's not too hard once he lets himself consider it.]
You'd become a part of him when he eats you. And he'll have something from you that no one else would. No one else ever will have. I mean, except here. Where you might come back to life. Would that cheapen it?
That is not one of my kinks. [ Will confirmed. ] I have a wide range I find myself wanting to explore, but I'll let you tell me what it was like to screw someone with a tail?
[ He was fishing, just a bit with that last question. There had been some weird exchanges, particularly the last time they had been in the same location with Rhys, but Will was curious about whether or not there was fire in the smoke. Really, neither of them has a position to toss around stones. Truth was, a threesome is probably one of the tamer ideas in their sex lives.
But this was part of why Will liked House's company. The doctor didn't get disgusted, or judgey (at least on the outside) about the horrors in Will's mind and his reality. He didn't have the same sort of door Will and Hannibal possessed but House appeared capable of observing through the windows and now being scared away.
Will nodded at the diagnosis and also suspected that it would clue House in on why Hannibal had reacted negatively to the teeth, yet open minded on the subject of the threesome. ]
I don't know. [ Will answered the question honestly. ] I don't think he knows. Hannibal is incredibly adaptable, it's part of why he's such a successful survivor. He might be taken aback at first, feel frustration at outside forces imposing change on his design.
But I suspect he'd be quick to find value in the way life and death are on hold here.
[The first question has House blinking a few times, the expression of a man wholly caught off-guard. He looks down and away and the relative darkness in the place is a blessing because it hides the blush that tinges his cheeks while he yanks his mask back up. Well, if that was even still a question for Will, that little aside just confirmed it. House gives himself a mental kick for the lapse and lets that line of the conversation drop. He doesn't know what to say about it, and he sure as hell doesn't want to talk about it with a guy he regularly plays gay chicken with and has had one too many... peculiar thoughts about while being murdered by him.
Anyway.]
Kinda jacks with the keeping it under the radar model unless he's real good at murdering without people actually seeing him do it. Or it's you or me.
[Because he knows neither of them are going to rat the guy out.]
[ That response was interesting and Will weighs continuing to poke around and adding it to his small file folder of curious events. He decided to add it to the file folder for the time being. After all, he was trying to get out of the dog house; not bracade himself in it. ]
He's very good at pulling off what would seem impossible, don't ever believe there is something he can't do, just because it doesn't seem feasible.
[ Will stretched his legs out, purposefully adopting a less defensive posture as he continued. ]
There is a woman, a friend of mine who was also a psychiatrist and a contemporary of Hannibal's, was his student at one time. Her name is Alana Bloom and I had something of a small flame for her.
She turned me down, was worried that I was too broken.
Anyway, when I was in Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane and I had sent someone to kill Hannibal, Hannibal retaliated by seducing Alana. He also seduced her on the same night that he went and grabbed a man named Abel Gideon, a serial killer who had claimed to be the Ripper; which annoyed Hannibal.
During this period, Jack had been investigating some of my asertations that Hannibal was the Ripper, so Hannibal was under some scrutiny. By sleeping with Alana, he took a swipe at me, and simultaneously created an alibi for himself. Because she slept through his leaving after they had sex, woke up to him back in bed. Her account was that he had been with her the entire night.
[ Will lifted his hands and made a motion of multiple levels. ]
[He knows that piece of information is being stored away for later, but House is just going to be grateful in this moment that Will is letting the line play out there. In the ideal world, he'll just forget about it entirely if they go long enough without discussing it.
The doctor's brows jump up, impressed. He won't say it to Hannibal, but he can appreciate the man's skill privately.]
He drug her to keep her under?
[Okay. That's probably not what a normal person should ask, but it's what he's curious about. Just how sneaky is Hannibal? And did he have to cheat a little?]
She did mention that they shared a "lovely glass of a very expensive merlot, he was considering buying a case of and wished her opinion, during their post coital relaxation."
[ Will remembered reading that line in Alana's alibi for Hannibal and smacking himself in the face with the file. In other words, incredibly sneaky.
Will would argue that Hannibal was that good in bed to knock a partner out for the count, but the psychiatrist wasn't one to let ego get in the way of thorough planning. ]
